    GeoServer umożliwia publikację danych z dowolnych źródeł danych przestrzennych używając otwartych standardów. GeoServer implementuje różne protokoły Open Geospatial Consortium, w tym: Web Map Service (WMS), Web Feature Service (WFS), Web Coverage Service (WCS) and Web Map Tile Service (WMTS). Dostępne są dodatkowe rozszerzenia dla Catalogue Service (CSW) oraz Web Processing Service (WPS).
